On days two and three of the international negotiations to ban cluster bombs in Dublin the issue of victim assistance was high on the agenda. The CMC is calling for a treaty that will not only ban cluster bombs but also provide financial, medical, socio-economic and psychological support to affected families, communities and individuals, including clearance of contaminated land. A group of survivors are involved in the negotiations to ensure the rights of affected people are at the heart of the treaty.

Civil society representatives and cluster bomb survivors from around the world today are calling on governments to support a comprehensive ban on cluster bombs, without exceptions. The call comes as more than 100 governments begin two weeks of final negotiations in Dublin, Ireland, on a new international treaty to ban cluster bombs. Certain states seek to weaken the treaty. Civil society representatives and survivors expect this to be the most significant humanitarian and disarmament treaty since the ban on antipersonnel landmines over a decade ago.

The New Zealand Cluster Munition Coalition stepped up its campaigning with a petition action in Civic Square. Led by Nobel Peace Laureate Jody Williams, campaigners and members of the public lay down and had a chalk outline made of their bodies that they then signed, constituting a petition signature against cluster bombs.
