China floods

CONFRONTING THE ELEMENTS

Heavy rains forced the evacuation of more than 1.66 million people in June 2008, and so far killed over 200 people.

  • Summer typhoons
  • Millions at risk
  • Mass evacuations

The summer typhoon season could bring disaster to the far-southern industrial hub of Guangdong province, home to 110 million permanent and migrant residents.

High tides, rain and converging rivers threaten to burst levees in the densely populated economic powerhouse neighbouring Hong Kong.

Officials said the province's low-lying Pearl River Delta suffered its biggest volume floods in over 50 years as well as the highest tides in over 10 years. Roads and highways have already been damaged, and officials are counting the cost in waterlogged crops, lost production and transport disruption.

Flooding has also struck as far north as Longnan, on the southern tip of Gansu province, north of Sichuan. Sihuan province’s quake-ravaged Wenchuan county has also experienced numerous floods.

Flooding is a perennial problem for much of south and east China in the summer. Typhoons usually hit the country till the end of the year, and the authorities regularly evacuate large numbers of people.
