Conflict and drought compound food shortages

The Famine Early Warning Systems Network FEWSNET is a good place to start.

The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organisation publishes country briefs on food security and satellite images of the growth and shortage of vegetation in the region on its Global Information and Early Warning System website.

The International Food Policy Research Institute published a useful report in October 2009 on food emergencies in East Africa.

The Humanitarian Policy Group at the London-based Overseas Development Institute (ODI) published a hard-hitting report in May 2007 highlighting critical gaps in the international aid response to food crises in the region.

U.N. ReliefWeb site has an Ethiopia page and a Somalia section.
