Ex-Soviet state struggles with separatists
Most international agencies and organisations operating in Moldova and its breakaway region have informative web presences. Chief among them is the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe. The U.S. State Department has a section on the separatist conflict and the United Nations details some of the issues at stake here. With poverty one of the main problems facing the people of Moldova and Transdniestria, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the World Health Organisation and the United Nations Development Programme are all very active in the area. This Moldova page, hosted by the U.N. refugee agency, lists a range of recent reports on the country from a variety of sources. There's some useful background information in this Library of Congress country study. The European Centre for Minority Issues is monitoring the situation and the Soros Foundation in Moldova is also active. The Brussels based think tank International Crisis Group has background and two reports, Regional Tensions over Transdniestria and Moldova: No Quick Fix. The U.N. children's fund UNICEF has background on Moldova, a wealth of statistics on social issues and features on issues such as child trafficking. The World Bank also has statistics and information on development projects.
