ALERTNET EVENT: Children, crises and the media
|
Sudan, Uganda and Congo are the world's three most dangerous places for children due to wars that have brought death, disease and displacement to millions, a Reuters AlertNet poll showed on Tuesday.
AlertNet asked more than 110 aid experts and journalists to highlight the world's most dangerous places to be a child. The poll's findings are the subject of a panel debate at the Foreign Press Association, London at 1400 GMT (1500 BST) on Tuesday, July 11. You can join the debate by asking the panel a question or sending us a comment using the form below. And to take part in a online discussion, scroll down to Global Voices below to find out how. IRC - Internet Relay Chat is a protocol that enables realtime chat on the Internet. We use IRC to enable "backchannel" conversations during live events and to allow people distributed around the world to ask questions of people on stage. To participate in an IRC conversation, first you need to download an IRC client. Popular, free clients include: Once you've installed a client, you need to connect to the server we're using: freenode.irc.net. Most clients will have an option, usually under the file menu, for "New Connection" or "Connnect". When asked for the server name, enter "irc.freenode.net". If the client requires you to enter a port number, use "6667". Go ahead and connect. As part of the connection process, the freenode server will ask you to choose a nickname. Keep in mind that there are thousands of people using this server - one of them is probably named "Joe" and has already claimed that nickname - you can save yourself a lot of frustration by choosing an uncommon username - many people use their FirstNameLastName. Once you've succesfully connected to the server and chosen a nickname, you need to join the channel we're speaking in - #globalvoices Find the command "Join" and join channel "#globalvoices". The hash sign is mandatory. Once you've joined the channel, you should see a list of other people in the room. In most clients, clicking on that person's name enables you to send private messages to that person. Typing into the text box in the client without selecting a person's name sends a message to the entire room, the most common way to talk in an IRC channel. |
