Membership Criteria
To be accepted as a Member your organisation must be:
1. Operationally active in humanitarian relief
Qualifying activities are:-
· Providing aid in cases of natural or man-made disasters
· Providing aid in cases of health emergencies
· Providing aid in cases of post-conflict recovery
· Helping refugees and displaced persons
Qualifying countries of operation are those which:-
· Have called for international humanitarian assistance in the past or are likely to do so in the future
And/or:-
· Are prone to natural or man-made disasters
And/or:-
· Are recovering from conflicts.
2. Non-discriminatory
That is your organisation should not discriminate on the basis of gender, race, creed or depart in any other way from the humanitarian ethic of supplying universal, unconditional help solely on the basis of need.
3. Non-profit-making
Many of the benefits of membership derive from valuable Reuters content and this is made available to AlertNet on the basis that it will only be used by registered charities.
4. Non-governmental
This excludes supra-national bodies like the United Nations and its associated organisations.
5. Members of their national network of NGOs (or be the network itself)
Smaller NGOs who are not registered with their national networks should not apply for membership - we only recognise those who are big enough to register and take on the responsibilities that such networks demand.
6. Into at least their third year of existence.
7. Committed to sharing information with other relief NGOs
AlertNet aims to get information flowing across relief organisations to promote more effective humanitarian relief. Critical to the success of this is the need for members to be willing to share information about their operations with others in the community. Membership terms require that NGOs commit to:-
i. Updating other members with full details of all their activities
ii. Providing a link to the AlertNet site (preferably from their homepage)
iii. Authorising AlertNet to automatically scan their website and to either import its content into AlertNet or make links to it on various parts of the AlertNet site
8. Adhering to international relief standards (Sphere and Red Cross)
9. Known to at least one existing AlertNet member (please see Member Directory
for full list)
Our membership is a validated one - we take some care in making sure that all our members are good citizens and we will ask for the name of at least one existing member, more usually two, who will vouch for the professionalism of the candidate members' work.
CONTRACT FOR MEMBERS
DEFINITIONS
"member" means a non-governmental organisation (NGO), international organisation, registered charity or equivalent voluntary body engaged in international disaster relief work and which has agreed to these terms and conditions. "Reuters Foundation" means the Reuters Foundation group of companies whose headquarters are at 85 Fleet Street, London EC4P 4AJ, United Kingdom being Reuters Foundation, Company Number 04047905, Charity Number 1082139 and Reuters Foundation Consultants Limited, Company Number 3740741. References to "we", "us" and "our" also refer to Reuters Foundation. "Reuters Group" means Reuters Group PLC and all its subsidiaries and holding companies from time to time. "Service" or "the site" means the Internet website entitled AlertNet created by the Reuters Foundation as a non-commercial venture for the benefit of the international disaster relief community. "Supplier" means an organisation engaged in the provision of materials or services for non-governmental organisations (NGOs), international organisations, registered charities or equivalent voluntary bodies engaged in international disaster relief work and which has agreed to these terms and conditions. "Supplier's Register" means the International Register of Aid Suppliers maintained by the Reuters Foundation and which contains details of contacts, products and services and information on Suppliers. "you" means the relevant member or Supplier as the context requires and "your" should be construed accordingly.BACKGROUND TO ALERTNET - THE SERVICE AND MEMBERSHIP
AlertNet is a humanitarian service provided by Reuters Foundation. A key part of the site is news from Reuters. We provide selected news free of charge on the public pages of the site. A more extensive service of news tailored to the needs of the international relief community is provided free of charge to members of the Professional Zone.
Our driving principle is that sharing information can save lives. But we also believe that there are some kinds of information that members may be happier restricting to other professionals.
The password-protected Professional Zone therefore gives you the confidence to exchange messages in the knowledge that you are talking to other relief professionals. Because of this, certain rules and regulations are necessary.
Access to the Professional Zone is restricted to members. Membership is designed for organisations actively involved in relief work internationally. Suppliers may join the Suppliers' Register. Applications in respect of both members and suppliers can be made online. If you wish to register as a member, the Terms and Conditions for Members as well as the General Terms and Conditions set out below will apply and you should indicate your acceptance by clicking on "I ACCEPT the above and wish to apply as a MEMBER" below. If you wish to register as a supplier, the Terms and Conditions for Suppliers as well as the General Terms and Conditions set out below will apply and you should indicate your acceptance by clicking on "I ACCEPT the above and wish to apply as a SUPPLIER" below.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS FOR MEMBERS (ONLY APPLICABLE TO MEMBERS)
As a member you will not be charged for taking part. In return, you are expected to contribute up-to-date information that will help other professionals in the relief world.
You will keep your password to the Professional Zone confidential and not allow it to be used by others. If you learn or suspect that your password has been obtained by another person, you will promptly notify us.
The kind of contributions expected include details of relief projects you are involved in. This forms a database that is invaluable to other members. It is available only to other members and you are expected to keep it up to date. Other contributions could include situation reports, news releases or messages advising other members of dangers or opportunities. If you need guidance on how to present your contributions, please contact the AlertNet team.
GENERAL TERMS AND CONDITIONS (APPLICABLE TO BOTH MEMBERS AND SUPPLIERS)
1. CONTRIBUTIONS
You should make all reasonable efforts to ensure that your contributions to the site are accurate, complete and up-to-date. You will not publish, upload or distribute via the site any material which:
makes unauthorised use of the copyrights, trade marks or other intellectual property rights of any other person
is defamatory, obscene, pornographic, abusive or otherwise illegal
puts at risk member organisations, AlertNet, Reuters or their staff or contractors.
You are solely responsible for the content of your contributions. We do not and cannot review every contribution you make. However, we reserve the right to delete, move or edit contributions that are not in accordance with these terms and conditions.
2. INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS AND USE
All rights in the layout, design and organisation of the Service are reserved by the Reuters Foundation. We own all rights in or have a license to the material we publish on AlertNet. Our members own all the rights to or have a license to the material they publish on the site but you grant us the rights to use such material in accordance with these terms and conditions.
Members may print or download extracts from any material appearing in the Professional Zone and make copies of these for use within their organisation. If you wish to use any material, including photographs and other images, for promotional or other purposes, please contact the AlertNet team.
Except as permitted above, you must not reproduce or redistribute any part of the site or transmit it or store it in any other web site or disseminate the material in any other form, without permission from us and, where relevant, from any other member concerned.
3. CONFIDENTIALITY AND PRIVACY POLICY
We will not pass on any information you post in the Professional Zone to anyone outside the AlertNet membership without permission of the relevant member.
Members will only use the list of members of the Professional Zone for the purpose of contacting them in connection with AlertNet, or with news and information about disaster relief. You will ensure that you keep your details on the site up to date. The privacy policy also applies to this agreement. You agree to abide by all relevant privacy laws in relation to any personal data.
4. LIABILITY
We make all reasonable efforts to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the material which we contribute to the Service. However, given the nature and cost of the Service we will not be liable for any loss caused by you doing, or not doing, anything as a result of any material on this site or for any loss arising from your use of or inability to use the site (save for death or personal injury caused by our negligence or for fraud or any other liability that cannot, by law, be limited or excluded).
You can access other sites via links from AlertNet. These sites are not under our control and we are not responsible in any way for their content.
We do not make any claims as to the Service's comprehensiveness, quality, fitness for any particular purpose or uninterrupted operation. We also do not guarantee that the site or its contents will be virus free.
The disclaimer also applies to this agreement. You agree the above liability arrangement is reasonable given the nature and cost of the Service.
5. TERMINATION AND MODIFICATION
We may terminate your access to the Service or any part of it immediately and without notice if you are in breach of any of these terms and conditions.
We may modify the service from time to time and may terminate it at any time with one month's notice.
We may modify these terms and conditions from time to time. We will give you notice of any forthcoming change by posting it on the site. The change will become effective one month after it is posted.
You may terminate your membership of the Service at any time by giving us one month's notice.
6. GENERAL
If any part of this agreement is found to be invalid or unenforceable, the rest of it will not be affected.
Your participation in this Service is personal to your organisation and you may not transfer it to anyone else.
Any notice given under this agreement shall be in writing and may be given by post, fax or email. You should send notices to:
