Chad: ICRC assists displaced and other vulnerable people affected by insecurity and violence in the east of the country

In 2006 and 2007, several outbursts of violence caused the displacement of tens of thousands of people in eastern Chad. The populations are today still having to cope with the consequences of chronic insecurity and violence in local areas. The ICRC is continuing its operations there to assist displaced people, the war-wounded and prisoners as well as the most vulnerable members of the local populations.

On December 26th, 2004 an earthquake off the coast of Sumatra triggered a devastating tsunami which claimed the lives of almost 230,000 people across five Indian Ocean countries. Four and a half years on - the massive task of reconstruction in affected countries is almost complete. Thousands of kilometres of coastline in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, India and the Maldives were devastated, but now, the barren ground where entire settlements were swept away has been transformed.
