Source: AlertNet

It has been more the four weeks since an earthquake-induced tsunami devastated coastal communities in south east Asia. In response, Europe's satellite imaging community continues to produce satellite maps to help to the humanitarian effort. Today, more than 120 sat maps of the affected region have been produced and published freely on the Internet.

This update summarises the types of sat maps available for southern Thailand. Maps are concentrated on the areas around Phuket and the Khao Lak Bay. Satellite maps available include:

> Sat maps showing areas of damage. Example map(526KB).

> Sat maps showing before and after views of affected areas. Example map(344KB).

> Maps showing regional elevation. Example map(452KB).

> Maps showing population density distribution. Example map(225KB).

Additional and full resolution sat maps are available at:

A farmer ploughs a rice field in Ayutthaya province, 80 km (50 miles) north of Bangkok, July 7, 2006. Thailand will step up its bird flu awareness campaign after villagers ignored its advice and handled and ate chickens that died mysteriously, the country's health minister said on Thursday.
