Severe flooding in northern Namibia
Similar to the year before severe flooding affected northern Namibia due to heavy local rains and inflow of water from northern regions during late February and March 2009. Due to the complex drainage pattern in the region satellite observation is an important tool to provide an overview of the large area flood situation, which is of very patchy and persistent character in the areas affected. Analysis a sequence of satellite imagery taken on 20th and 24th of February over the northern Omusati region show that water levels were rising in the flood areas about 40 km west of Oshakati town and in that region flood levels already have reached the levels of March 2008. For the region about 40 km north-west of Oshakati the satellite imagery showed that the water levels had also been rising between the 20th and 24th of February 2009 but had not yet fully reached those of March 2008.
