Protos is a water NGO. Its mission is to work on a better world for the underprivileged people, in the area of water. The user has
requested maps over the cities of Mopti and Ténenkou in central Mali. Protos is interested in the map information to support integrated water management projects for the cities.
Ténenkou is a small town in the central part of Mali, which has some problems related to the seasonal floods. The old part of the town is located higher than the surroundings but the newer
part of the town is located under the water level. A dike has been built to prevent this newer part of the city from flooding. Because the new part of the city is situated lower than the surroundings
and since there are no pumps, the used water cannot be deviated outside the city. Therefore, the problem if the city us that the used water has to be deviated to 3 depressions (mares) in the city.
This thematic map shows the concenssions where groups of people live. The map also shows the contour lines projected on a QuickBird satellite image. The proposed solution for the problem mentioned
above is to make the 3 mares deeper. These works are represented on the map. Protos a ims to improve hygienic circumstances in the town. The maps are used to communicate with local official and
civilians on the water issues and to asses the construction plan.
