Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) - Update 24th November 2007
Since the mid-1990s, millions of Congolese have fled their homes to escape fighting between rebel groups and the national government in a complex conflict which has spilled over into neighbouring states. Almost four million people are estimated to have died as a result, with survivors experiencing widespread human rights violations, including the killing of civilians, sexual violence against women, and the recruitment of child soldiers.
ActionAid DRC is working closely with other aid agencies and non-governmental organizations to assess the needs of the population of the MUGUNGA 2 camp for internally displaced people on the outskirts of Goma. We are providing essential items such as water containers to all 6,000 households in the camp, reaching a total of 15,526 people. ActionAid staff are also in the process of implementing a programme of psychosocial care for women who have suffered often extreme trauma and violence as a result of the conflict.
