The British Red Cross has released £30,000 from its Disaster Fund to help those affected by Cyclone Nagris.

According to the BBC, state media say the death total from the cyclone could be as high as 4,000. That figure has not been independently confirmed.

Hundreds of thousands of those caught up in the cyclone need shelter and drinking water, according to UN disaster response official Richard Horsey.

The Myanmar Red Cross has distributed thousand of family kits and is assessing the situation in capital city Yangon (Rangoon). However, access and communications are difficult and more information is not expected until Tuesday.

The British Red Cross is preparing to release family kits from its warehouse in Kuala Lumpur. And the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is also preparing to release  2,000 shelter and 2,000 family kits . These will be sent to Myanmar as soon as transport routes are reconnected
