Islamic Relief Worldwide (IRW) has launched an appeal to supply 27,000 mosquito nets to north-eastern Kenya where over 150 people have died after an outbreak of Rift Valley Fever (RVF).

The disease is carried by mosquitoes and causes victims to suffer from liver failure and nose and mouth bleeds. In some cases the disease can lead to death.

Recent flooding in the country has left stagnant pools of water, providing ideal breeding grounds for the mosquitoes which spread RVF and malaria. The insects have bred rapidly, spreading the deadly virus as they bite.

"Mosquito nets are urgently needed to safeguard women and children from the deadly fever and protect them from malaria for years to come," said Makki Mohamed, Islamic Relief's Head of Africa Programmes.

He further added: "We plan to provide mosquito nets to protect 27,000 children and pregnant or nursing mothers".

Each net costs just £2.50 and can help protect a woman or child from RVF and malaria.

The mosquito nets have been treated with a long-lasting insecticide which works for up to 5 years.

For more information about the appeal call Jamsheed Din on 0121 622 0663 / 07720451310 or Helen Mould on 0121 622 0719.

ATTENTION EDITORS: VISUALS COVERAGE OF SCENES OF DEATH AND INJURY Police officers stand next to the body of Kenya's most-wanted gangster, Simon Matheri, which lies on the ground in Athi River town, 25 km (15.5 miles) southeast of the capital Nairobi, February 20, 2007. Kenyan police gunned down the gangster in a suburban hideout on Tuesday, trying to decisively end a high-profile murder wave that claimed a top AIDS researcher and the wife of a U.S. embassy official.
