On March the 4th the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for the President of Sudan . Following that announcement it has been confirmed that 10 foreign aid agencies have had their registration to work in North Sudan and Darfur revoked. At this stage RedR is still operating in the region and has resumed its training but continues to monitor and evaluate the situation.
The relief agency which provides vital training and support to relief workers operating in Sudan, in particular the Darfur region, is pleased to be able to continue with its work.
Martin McCann, RedR's Chief Executive comments;
"We are hoping that these issues can be resolved quickly and that our dedicated team in Sudan can go on providing support to the thousands of relief workers currently in Darfur, enabling them to continue with their life-saving work. Since 2005 we have delivered 226 courses, providing training in personal safety, safety management and first aid to 2796 participants. 94 % of those we have trained are Sudanese aid workers. While we are keen to continue with our programme, our main concern at this time is for the safety of our staff and their families."
RedR has been operating in Sudan since 2005 and currently has 39 staff working in Khartoum and Darfur, 36 of whom are Sudanese nationals. RedR is an independent, impartial organisation whose activities in Sudan exist to ensure that crucial aid can continue to be provided to the 4.7 million people affected by the ongoing conflict in Darfur.
