US: UMCOR SAGER BROWN MARKS 140 YEARS OF SERVICE
Former students and residents of Sager Brown Home and Godman School, together with staff, guests and church officials, shared fond memories during an April 21 open house celebrating 140 years of ministry on the Sager Brown campus. Participants praised the ministry that now reaches around the world through distribution of relief supplies. Supply distribution is the most recent use of the campus. You can join in the ongoing celebration with your gifts to UMCOR Advance # 901440. Or print out a special greeting card for depot staff to send with your supplies. You can also write a reflection of what Sager Brown means to you. Read more and find the card and essay in the special web pages created for the celebration
SOUTH ASIA: TSUNAMI RECOVERY CONTINUES
Economically vulnerable Sri Lankans and residents of Banda Aceh who are still finding their footing after the 2004 tsunami are among those to receive aid worth millions of dollars. UMCOR's Board of directors on April 24 approved a total of $6.8 million for comprehensive programs of shelter, livelihood, and capacity building. The grants came from gifts received for the South Asia Emergency, UMCOR Advance 274305. "It's not only about what we're doing for individual families but how our service will strengthen their sense of community," Bishop Edward W. Paup, UMCOR President, told directors. Other grants were also approved. Read more...
US: UMCOR RESPONDS IN COLORADO, TEXAS, MEXICO
UMCOR is providing a grant to respond to immediate needs after a tornado damaged homes and buildings in the Holly, CO, area. United Methodists there offered their fellowship hall as a site for disaster child care. In Eagle Pass, TX, and nearby border communities of Mexico, UMCOR workers are still evaluating damages and needs following severe tornadoes there. Please pray for the survivors of these disasters and consider a gift of support to UMCOR Advance #901670, Domestic Disaster Response.
RESOURCES: FAIR TRADE AND MALARIA
Two new resources are available for you to use in worship, church school or other venues. Fair Trade Day is May 12. A bulletin insert will help you interpret how for many farmers and artisans, being able to sell into the fair trade market means the difference between feeding their family or not, sending their children to school or not, or having many other basic necessities. Get this insert here. United Methodists are joining with others to make malaria history. The Make Malaria History campaign represents the spectrum of efforts United Methodists are supporting to eradicate this preventable and curable disease that kills at least a million people every year.
