INDIA: FLOOD RELIEF

Some 1,500 families will receive assistance following severe flooding in West Bengal, India. Unrelenting rain lasting several days caused flooding which has affected more than 50,000 people.

UMCOR is working through Action by Churches Together partners in the area including Church's Auxiliary for Social Action (CASA). CASA along with other partner organizations are providing assistance to 1,500 of the most vulnerable families. They will receive tarps, food, water purification tablets, clothing and fodder for surviving livestock.

Please support UMCOR's response to this and other needs abroad by giving to International Disaster Response, UMCOR Advance #982450 Online Giving

US: FLOOD BUCKETS NEEDED

Recent storms have severely reduced the flood bucket stock at UMCOR Sager Brown Depot, Baldwin, La. This low inventory is a serious concern especially when the Atlantic hurricane season is still uncertain. UMCOR needs your help to ensure this kind of support continues to be readily available.

Please give to Material Resources, UMCOR Advance # 901440 which will enable UMCOR to purchase needed relief supplies. A list of the contents can be found here, or you can give $45 towards the purchase of these items. Online Giving

LIBERIA: A NEW BEGINNING

At the end of July 2007 a group of former soldiers in Liberia's drawn out civil war graduated with skills that have nothing to do with the guns of their youth. This class of 771 young men in Lofa County, Liberia completed nine months of training in marketable skills such as carpentry, masonry, tailoring, and auto mechanics. In addition, they gained basic math and literacy skills and learned how to operate a small business.

"I was very happy," said Kezelee of his acceptance to UMCOR's program. "Some of my friends who were trained by UMCOR in 2005 were already skilled in various trades and have started earning money." UMCOR gives each graduate the tools of his new trade so he can start working immediately.

UGANDA: MALARIA AND KIDS

This year more than half the children at Humble School, a United Methodist school in Uganda, contracted malaria. This disease plagues children and adults throughout sub-Saharan Africa, killing a child every 30 seconds.

You can help be part of the solution. Basic measures like reducing mosquito breeding grounds, using mosquito nets, and improving access to anti-malarial medication can make a big difference. United Methodists are doing just that through the Malaria Control Program. Contribute to this effort by giving to Malaria Control, UMCOR Advance #982009.Online Giving
