UMCOR is responding with initial emergency grants for both the Louisiana and Texas Annual Conferences affected by Hurricane Humberto which struck the Texas-Louisiana border on Thursday, Sept. 13.
What began as a tropical storm, Hurricane Humberto strengthened with intensity into an 85 mile-per-hour hurricanethe fastest transformation on record according to forecasters. Thousands of homes were damaged in the same area that was struck by Hurricane Rita in 2005. Approximately 100,000 people are without electrical power. In Southwest Louisiana increasing floods are feared to cause further damage. UMCOR remains in contact with both conferences as damage assessments are being made.

PERU: EARTHQUAKE RECOVERY CONTINUES
UMCOR continues to support Action by Churches Together, an international relief alliance, to bring assistance to families affected by the massive earthquake that destroyed several cities in Peru on Aug.15.
One hundred temporary emergency shelters have been provided and families are actively constructing their own shelters using local materials. Food kits were distributed to 250 families and psychological care services are being given to 500 children through recreational activities which help the children cope with their trauma.

MOZAMBIQUE: AGRICULTURAL EDUCATION
UMCOR is supporting the Mozambique Annual Conference in its efforts to sustain the work begun in its Cambine Vocational School and maintain the needed services of its current Agricultural Coordinator.
The Conference runs boarding hostels for men and women who are studying agriculture and learning how to produce vegetables, field crops and raise chickens, pigs and cows. The school also equips future pastors with a Seminary education where in their first year of study, they take a hands-on agriculture course to learn how to work the fields and produce food. The program also helps to improve the nutrition of children in the Carolyn Belsche Orphanage, which is a home to 50 orphans of war or of parents who died of HIV/AIDS.
Future plans for the school are to hire more teachers and increase field production. Please support the agricultural training and the work of the Mozambique Annual Conference that is providing a livelihood and a bright future to many. Give to

CHURCH RESOURCES: WORLD FOOD DAYNEW CHURCH BULLETIN INSERT
World Food Day is Tuesday October 16. It is a worldwide event designed to increase awareness, bring understanding and encourage year-around action to alleviate hunger. United Methodists are encouraged to observe this important day as foreign aid for agriculture continues to decline.
An estimated 854 million people around the world remain undernourished. One way UMCOR is answering this need is through its support for the Foods Resource Bank. FRB is an ecumenical organization where US farmers designate acreage for growing projects. Communities pool their resources to cover the cost of production and then the proceeds from the crop are used to help eliminate hunger overseas through UMCOR and other denominational agencies.
