ARMENIA: WORLD FOOD DAY

Today is World Food Day. One way UMCOR helps is through its Cheese Distribution Program in Armenia. Anush, a little Armenian girl, is among the 31 percent of children that are below the average weight and height due to malnutrition. Children who are malnourished do not physically develop the way they should. Cheese is providing a healthier life.

About 6,000 vulnerable people receive three ounces of cheese every day through this program, which started in 1999. The cheese adds the vital protein, essential vitamins and minerals that are necessary for their bodies to grow and function properly. Anush no longer suffers from malnutrition.

UMCOR continues to buy locally produced cheese for Armenia, one of the 22 worst undernourished populations in the world. About 21 tons of cheese will be delivered to several Armenian institutions serving children and the elderly. Help children like Anush get nourishing meals this World Food Day. US: UMCOR HELPS REBUILD KATRINA-STRUCK COMMUNITY

UMCOR is supporting Northshore Disaster Recovery, Inc., (NDRI) in the long-term recovery effort to rebuild the Slidell, La., community which is still recuperating from extensive damage caused by Hurricane Katrina.

A recent partnership between NDRI and Save the Children will reach out to children as well. Mobile homes will be placed in St. Tammany that will function as community centers. The center will offer community after-school programs, tutoring, crisis counseling and more. UMCOR steps in and stays in long after a disaster strikes aiding communities in the recovery process.

US: “FACES OF FAIR TRADE” TOUR

On Oct. 27 and 28 during Fair Trade Month (Oct.) farmers from around the world will unite in New York City as part of a six-city speaking tour. The tour, “Faces of Fair Trade: Uniting the Global and Local,” is designed to create an open forum to discuss ways farmers can obtain a fair market share and build a healthier and more sustainable food system.

The event, sponsored by UMCOR’s partner Equal Exchange, Oké USA and Red Tomato fair trade organizations, will take place in six cities—including Boston, MA., New Haven, CT., Philadelphia, PA., Washington, D.C., and New York City. Click here for tour calendar, times and locations near you.

UMCOR supports small-scale farmers like these through the UMCOR Coffee Project. The Project helps farmers in Latin America, Asia and Africa earn a fairer share of income, obtain access to credit and technical support, as well as gain a trading partner they can trust such as Equal Exchange. Support fair trade farmers by purchasing coffee, chocolate, tea and more through this project. Click here for more information.
