AFRICA: MOZAMBIQUE FLOOD RESPONSE
Please pray for the thousands of people affected by damaging floods caused by torrential rains in Mozambique. Among those affected include Save and Nova Mambone United Methodist Churches located along the Save River. UMCOR is in contact with Action by Churches Together as well as the Mozambique UMC to assess the situation and is working on a plan of action. UMCOR will address the immediate humanitarian concerns as well as long-term recovery needs.
Zambia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi have been lashed by heavy rains for several weeks. Swollen rivers have burst their banks, killing dozens and forcing thousands of villagers to flee flooded homes, according to Reuters news reports.
You can help UMCOR in its anticipated response by giving to: Mozambique Emergency, UMCOR Advance #156500.
The US Agriculture Department, in its Global Food Security Report, estimates that the number of Africa's hungry people will grow to 427 million by 2012.
These statistics are growing daily. UMCOR is working to relieve the suffering caused by droughts and famines throughout Africa. Through food distribution, nutrition programs, disease prevention awareness and agricultural training techniques, UMCOR is helping to save lives. Help lessen hunger in Africa by giving where it counts.
Your gifts can bring relief to the growing hunger crisis through the All Africa Drought and Famine Relief, UMCOR Advance #101250.
UMCOR is still at work helping thousands of people displaced by the recent post-election violence in Kenya through its partner Church World Service.
Efforts to provide food and shelter are underway to the East Africa Conference and basic supplies have been shipped to the Nairobi Evangelical Graduate School of Theology in Karen where many Kenyans are seeking refuge.
The violence triggered a mass exodus of people in Kenya and has forced many from their homes and from their families. Please help Kenya in their time of need by giving to International Disaster Response--Kenya, Advance #982450.
US: WELCOMING NEWCOMERS IN TENNESSEE
A special meal was served by the Colonial Heights United Methodist Church in Knoxville, Tenn. Among those invited were more than 30 Burundi refugee families from Bridge Refugee Services, a Church World Service affiliate and UMCOR partner.
The event gave hundreds of residents an opportunity to socialize and welcome newcomers into the community and share their life journeys. The yearly event which honors a former church member who died in a 2000 traffic accident--was remembered with gift giving, warmth and grateful hearts.
"We all come to church, and we eat, and we all get to know each other," said Shayona Davenport, 8 years old. "I thank the Lord for letting us eat all together." Please continue to support refugee programs like this one and help refugee families feel at home and welcomed. Give to New Hope for Newcomers, UMCOR Advance #901779.
Thousands of youth from churches across the country are getting ready to join the fight against hunger on Feb 3. Join UMCOR's partner, Souper Bowl of Caring, in this movement to help youth learn about the magnitude of domestic and international hunger.
By collecting cash donations through church offerings or collecting soup cans for a local shelter or food pantry--your involvement will make a positive difference in the lives of others.
