WEST AFRICA: COTE D'IVOIRE GETS ONE MILLION NETS
Nearly one million nets will be distributed throughout 18 civil districts in Cote d'Ivoire, West Africa from Nov. 11-15. The distribution of nets is a result of a unified effort involving UMCOR, United Methodist Communications and more than 750 United Methodist volunteers from Cote d'Ivoire and the Texas Annual Conferences which initiated the net distribution effort. A contribution of $1 million from the Texas Annual Conference was multiplied nearly five times over with contributions from the United Nations Foundation.
During this week, a net will be provided to families participating in the integrated health campaign which targets children nine months to five years old who are also receiving other medical treatment. The nets were purchased through the UN Foundation's Nothing But Nets Campaign. Volunteers received basic malaria education training through UMCOR Health's Malaria Control program. US: VOLUNTEERS URGENTLY NEEDED FOR CLEAN-UP LABOR r
The Indiana Annual Conference is in urgent need of volunteers to assist more than 80 families in clean-up following three major flooding events this year in the Midwest. Volunteers are needed to clean-up soggy drywall and floors as well as help remove mold in homes damaged by the floods. The conference hopes to complete the clean-up work by year-end so that rebuilding may begin for affected residents.
Remaining flood waters caused by heavy rains from Hurricane Ike are slowing down the recovery process. In the meantime, UMCOR is working with the conference to provide extensive case management training.
Interested individuals or volunteer groups may contact Chris Eller Esparza at 219-836-5390 or 219-923-2302, Ext. 311, to be assigned a family. Interested teams can go to the Indiana Area web site or contact their Jurisdictional Volunteer in Mission Coordinator for more information. US: CONNECTING MUSIC AND MISSION
A Texas-based United Methodist clergy band called Connections is 'connecting' secular 70's music with faith themes and missions to help raise funds for UMCOR. So far, Connections has raised more than $44,000 for both UMCOR relief programs and Nothing But Nets since their first concert in May, 2006.
The all-volunteer band which began at a clergy retreat of the North Texas Annual Conference, seeks to make a difference around the world through United Methodist missional giving. The band is supporting "connectional causes" like that of UMCOR's disaster relief work to help raise funds for those in need. The Connections band performs for free, but takes up an offering for UMCOR. Thank you Connections!

Christopher Nynguor, 33 of Crozierville Villiage, Liberia is making the best of UMCOR's Sustainable Agriculture and Development (SA&D) training by empowering others with what he has learned. He is teaching his family and his community how to improve their livelihood by sharing farming techniques, beekeeping, Moringa growing and livestock knowledge.
While Nynguor shares his UMCOR-acquired knowledge, his brother Chris helps at home with beekeeping by building hives. This year, Nynguor harvested 10 gallons of honey. He used the proceeds to build six additional hives - his goal is to own 150 hives.
UMCOR's SA&D programs adopt a farmer-to-farmer model that encourages participants to share their skills with others in the community.
