US: Dakota Flood Preparation LIBERIA: Saving Lives INDONESIA: Water and Sanitation Education DRC: Leaders Learn about Health UMCOR: Thank You for Giving!Flood preparations are underway in Fargo, North Dakota as major spring flooding is expected in Red River Valley from snow melt and a strong storm system forecast in the next few days. Record flooding is possible at many locations on the Red River of the north and its tributaries with major flooding expected for most of the Red River Basin and Devils Lake Basin.
UMCOR is in contact with the Dakotas Annual Conference and Deborah Ball-Kilbourn, superintendent of Three Rivers District, who says they are in a holding pattern at this time, but are busy assembling cleaning buckets for the anticipated floods. UMCOR is standing by to assist the conference in flood preparation and recovery.
The flood stage is 19 feet, but forecasters are reporting the river could rise as high as 40 feet above flood level over the next week. You can help North Dakota prepare for the floods by giving to Domestic Disaster Response, UMCOR Advance #901670.or provide cleaning bucket contents by clicking here.
Angeline Willicor boldly speaks about HIV/AIDS, a topic still taboo in her Ganta, Liberia community. She has earned a solid reputation as an AIDS educator and is saving the lives of many women who are HIV positive.
As the head of the HIV/AIDS counseling team at the UMCOR-supported Ganta United Methodist Hospital, Willicor works passionately to help the women learn how to live with HIV/AIDS and deal with issues of stigma. Willicor gives women who feel alone and are depressed the encouragement they need to keep on living.
You can support UMCOR's work in Ganta Hospital and counseling programs like these by sending your gifts to Hospital Revitalization, UMCOR Advance #982168.
INDONESIA: WATER AND SANITATION EDUCATION
In North Central Liberia, an infestation of army worms (caterpillars) has caused widespread damage to crops in Zota District and Bong County. About 100 villages and over 300,000 farmers and families have been affected. The situation has led to a severe food shortage and the contamination of water sources which is causing people to get ill.
UMCOR is responding with an emergency grant to help the Liberia Annual Conference improve and restore the six farming communities affected by the infestation. UMCOR is providing technical training about crop and pest management, conducting farm trials and training local farming communities to increase food production.
Support this agricultural restoration project by giving to Sustainable Agriculture & Development, UMCOR Advance #982188.
DRC: LEADERS LEARN ABOUT HEALTH
This week, in honor of World Water Day, creative hygiene trainings in Indonesia are modifying people's attitudes and behaviors toward better hygiene practices.
Through UMCOR's WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) Project, teachers are learning how to better influence the hygiene behaviors of their students. Following the training, UMCOR will provide the teachers with lesson plans, informational banners and flyers to promote good sanitation. UMCOR will also support the trained-teachers by organizing clean-up campaigns in schools while reinforcing the need to preserve the nation's rivers to mark the celebration.
Support practical hygiene training events like these by giving to Indonesia Emergency, UMCOR Advance #217400.
