Silver Spring, Maryland--As the violent unrest resulting from last week's presidential elections in Kenya continues to force hundreds of thousands from their homes, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) is coordinating with local partner organizations and non-governmental agencies (NGOs) to provide emergency food assistance and medical supplies for displaced and affected families in and around Nairobi.

Coordinating its response with the Kenya Red Cross, ADRA Kenya is working with local partners, along with Food for the Hungry International, Catholic Relief Services, and other agencies to distribute one-week supplies of food, including 12 metric tons of donated maize, to approximately 1,000 families in the Jamhuri Park and Kibera communities of Nairobi.

The coordinated response will also provide each family with a coal stove, a 90-pound bag of charcoal, and cooking sets.

In addition, ADRA is preparing a shipment of pharmaceuticals and medical supplies, which will be used to treat the urgent medical needs of those in the affected communities of Kisumu, Kisii, and Eldoret, in the Nyanza and Rift Valley provinces west of Nairobi.

Along with the food and medical supplies distributed through ADRA Kenya, ADRA has committed funds to the response efforts and will continue to expand its assistance as needs change.

The most recent reports from Kenya indicate that at least 100,000 people have sought refuge from the violence, and that an estimated 500,000 people have been affected and are in need of humanitarian assistance.

To donate to ADRA's emergency response effort to aid violence-displaced families in Kenya and other emergencies, please contact ADRA at 1.800.424.ADRA (2372) or donate online to ADRA's Emergency Response fund at www.adra.org.

ADRA is present in 125 countries, providing community development and emergency management without regard to political or religious association, age, gender, or ethnicity.
