Silver Spring, Maryland—The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) is currently assisting survivors of Tropical Storm Julio after heavy rains flooded homes and affected more than 2,000 people in Guaymas, Sonora, northwestern Mexico. As part of its response, ADRA is providing food aid to low-income families struggling to recover from the recent disaster.

On Monday, August 25, Tropical Storm Julio swept over Mexico's Baja California peninsula, carrying winds of up to 50 mph (85 km/h), and bringing an onslaught of heavy rainfall that displaced thousands of families living along coastal areas. The storm killed two people and left more than a dozen towns isolated.

On September 3, ADRA launched a 10-day emergency food distribution project to provide food baskets to 184 families, or approximately 920 people, affected by the flooding. Each family is receiving a food basket with enough supplies to feed five people for 14 days. Baskets are stocked with flour, rice, pasta, oats, tomato sauce, a bottle of vitamin C, beans, lentils, milk, tuna, cooking oil, sugar, and salt. This ensures that each beneficiary receives the international standard of 2,100 calories per day.

In partnership with local authorities, ADRA is active in the affected areas and continuing to assess the situation in order to determine the greatest needs. Although shelters have been temporarily constructed in the city, many families have chosen to stay at home to protect their properties from looting. This created a need for roofing sheets, mattresses, and food.

This project is funded in partnership with ADRA International, the ADRA Inter-American Regional Office, and ADRA Mexico.

To assist in ADRA's emergency response to the flooding in Mexico and other hurricane responses contributions can be donated to ADRA's Emergency Response Fund, by phone at 1.800.424.ADRA (2372) or online at www.adra.org

ADRA is a non-governmental organization present in 125 countries providing sustainable community development and disaster relief without regard to political or religious association, age, gender, or ethnicity.

Additional information about ADRA can be found at www.adra.org.
