Geneva (ICRC) – Jakob Kellenberger, president of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), has
arrived in Luxembourg for a one-day visit during which he will hold talks with Jean-Louis Schiltz, minister for development cooperation and humanitarian affairs, and Lucien Weiler, speaker of
parliament, and with members of the Committee on Foreign and European Affairs, Cooperation and Immigration.
The talks are expected to focus on the humanitarian situation in some of the ICRC’s main areas of operations and on the relevance of international humanitarian law in today’s conflicts.
On the occasion of this visit, Mr Schiltz and Mr Kellenberger will sign a memorandum of understanding formalizing Luxembourg’s support for the ICRC for the next four years.
In 2006 Luxembourg joined the group of countries contributing more than 10 million Swiss francs to the organization’s annual budget.
The ICRC president will also be meeting Jacques Hansen, director-general of the Luxembourg Red Cross, and other senior officials of the National Society.
