Sudan: ICRC president visits Sudan for third time in two years

Khartoum/Geneva (ICRC) – "The ICRC remains committed to the people of Sudan, both to those living through the transition from war to peace in the south, and to communities affected by armed violence and insecurity in Darfur," said the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Jakob Kellenberger, on leaving for his third visit to the country since the Darfur conflict started in 2004.

Mr Kellenberger will be in Sudan from today until 21 February, travelling first to the south and then to Darfur.

While in Darfur, he will be assessing the humanitarian consequences of the widespread violence there and the impact of the ICRC's efforts to help those at risk The ICRC president will be holding meetings with senior Sudanese officials and ICRC field staff during his five-day visit.

With a budget of over 73 million Swiss francs for 2007, and more than 1,500 staff, Sudan remains the ICRC's largest operation worldwide for the fourth consecutive year.
