Details of the Emergency: Heavy rains have caused the Mwanza river to burst its banks, flooding Lengwe and Majete areas in Malawi's southern district Chikwawa. The floods have so far killed a total of nine people in both localities, where ACT member the Evangelical Lutheran Development Service (ELDS) operates.

The floods have displaced more than 1,383 households in Lengwe and another 1,540 households in Majete. At least 256 houses have been swept away while others have been submerged in flood waters. Crops (maize, sorghum, cassava and sweet potato) on a total 383.9 ha of land have been washed away. The villagers have also lost 921 goats, 50 cattle, 28 pigs and 570 poultry.

The Mwanza river originates from neighbouring Mozambique and joins the Shire River in Malawi, the only outlet of Lake Malawi. Malawi is in the midst of its rainy season which particularly affects the south of the country. Chikwawa and Nsanje districts, know as the Lower Shire, are Malawi's lowest point and are prone to flooding.

Purpose of Response: To save the lives of those affected and to restore communities to normal.

Beneficiary information and location of response: More than 1,383 households in 27 villages in Lengwe and 1,540 in 19 villages Majete.

Proposed Assistance: The proposed assistance includes food aid, temporary shelter materials (plastic sheeting), utensils, clothing, blankets, water purification tablets, sanitary materials and crop seeds. A total of 110 households and under-five children will be provided with food aid, plastic sheeting, utensils, clothing, blankets while 400 households will receive water purification chemicals, sanitary materials and crop seeds.

Implementation Period: The implementation period will be three months from December 2006 to February 2007.

ACTION

The ACT Co-ordinating Office has approved the use of US$ 21,821 towards the budget from its Rapid Response Fund and would be grateful to receive contributions to wholly or partially replenish this payment.
