Rapid Response Payment No. 4/2007

Funds Sent To: Ecumenical Committee for Social Development (CEDES)

Amount Sent: US$ 50,000

Date: 13 February 2007

Details of Payment

Emergency: Floods in Mozambique

Date of Emergency: February 2007

Implementing partners: Ecumenical Committee for Social Development (CEDES), Lutheran World Federation (LWF) and Christian Council of Mozambique (CCM)

Details of the Emergency: Heavy rains in neighbouring countries, Zambia and Zimbabwe have forced the Cahora Bassa Dam in Mozambique's Tete Province above capacity levels, causing major floods that displaced peoples, animals and destroyed livelihoods, houses and crops. This situation continues to fall across much of the Zambezi River basin, including Sofala, Tete and Manica Provinces. The Government, which has now declared the situation as emergency, estimates 300,000 to 500,000 people affected by the floods. To date, 29 people have died, and about 120,000 others are at extreme risks. By 13 February, 60,000 people have been evacuated to secure places. The National Institute for Disaster Management (INGC), the army, UN, Red Cross and NGOs are evacuating those affected to secure areas.

Purpose of Response: To provide immediate assistance to those affected by the floods. This rapid response intervention is also a preparation of Joint Flood Appeal by ACT.

Beneficiary information and location of response: ACT members are concentrating their efforts to assist 8,000 families at the following locations: LWF/IPM in Mutarara district in Tete; LWF in Zumbu and Magoe districts in Tete Province; Christian Council of Mozambique is operating in Mopeia and Chinde in Zambezi Province and CEDES in collaboration with WFP will work in Caia and Marromeu in Sofala province. LWF is supporting other ACT members in their areas of operation, initially with emergency goods and logistics.

Proposed Assistance: ACT Forum members plan to distribute the immediate shelter materials, blankets and kitchen sets that are already in stock, mostly with LWF and carry out the necessary assessment missions.

Implementation Period: The implementation period will be carried out as soon as possible and will be finalised before the end of February 2007.

BUDGET: US$ 50,000

(FOR THE DETAILED BUDGET, KINDLY VISIT THE ACT SITE. THANK YOU.)
