Occupied Palestinian Territories

Gaza Crisis - MEPL71

Appeal Target: US$ 755,691

Geneva, 9 July 2007

The Gaza Strip has undergone dramatic developments over the last month as intensive factional fighting between Hamas and Fatah reached an explosive peak the week of June 12th, leaving over 650 casualties, of whom 116 were killed. In this wake is a population in uncertain and precarious conditions. The ACT CO issued $48,864 of Rapid Response Funds to the Department for Service to Palestinian Refugees (DSPR) on June 20th to help them with an initial, quick response to the emergency.

In addition to the crisis in Gaza, the on-going blockage of funds by international donors and the withholding of money from taxes and custom duties collected for the Palestinian National Authority by the Israeli government since March 2006, has created a dire humanitarian situation for the majority of Palestinians in the West Bank.

ACT member the Middle East Council of Churches/Department of Service to Palestine Refugees (MECC/DSPR), is proposing to provide cash grants, supplementary food support, and health services to the most vulnerable families in the Gaza strip and West Bank areas.

Project Completion Date: 25 June 2007 - 24 December 2007

A Palestinian woman walks out with her grandson after they returned to Gaza from Egypt through Erez crossing July 31, 2007. Crossings into the Gaza Strip from Israel and Egypt were closed to most traffic after the June 14 Hamas takeover of the enclave of 1.5 million people, resulting in shortages of food and other essentials. But this week Israel began allowing Palestinians stranded in Egypt to return to Gaza via the Jewish state, in a deal agreed with Egypt and Abbas' Western-backed government but criticized by Hamas.
