Flood affected in Sindh & Balochistan Provinces: ASPK71

On 23 June, a severe storm caused over 200 deaths in Karachi city, Sindh Province, also affecting the districts of Thatta and Dadu. On 26 June tropical cyclone, "Yemyin" struck coastal areas in southern Balochistan and Sindh province, followed by continuous torrential rains, which resulted in wide scale damage to roads, communication links, water systems, crops and houses. Thousands of people were evacuated from Hingo and Kech districts, especially Turbat city, which was subject to massive flooding as rivers burst their banks and dams were breached. In the crisis situation some 2.5 million people were affected, 88,344 homes destroyed with more than 371,092 displaced and homeless. Water contamination and poor sanitary conditions mean that more and more cases of water-borne diseases and skin problems are being reported in the flood affected areas.

The response to this emergency is being directly implemented by ACT member Church World Service- Pakistan/Afghanistan (CWS-P/A) along with their partner organisations Strengthening Participatory Organisation (SPO) and South Asia Partnership - Pakistan (SAP - PK). ACT member Norwegian Church Aid (NCA) will be providing technical support to CWS-P/A in water and sanitation interventions. In the first week of July, with ACT Rapid Response Funding, CWS-P/A provided immediate relief to 250 households through the distribution of food packages consisting of wheat, rice, pulses, cooking oil, sugar, tea leaves, powdered milk and salt, as well as matches, bath soap and 320 plastic sheets for temporary shelter.

This proposal is a follow up programme of assistance in the areas of water and sanitation, primary healthcare and hygiene promotion, shelter and psychosocial support for over 20,000 of the most affected households in three target districts- Gadap Town and Thatta District in Sindh Province, and Turbat (Kech) District in Balochistan Province over a 10 month period. Vulnerable families and people such as widows, children and the elderly who are without food and in need of assistance will be given priority in the selection process.
