Indonesia - Java

Yogyakarta - Assistance to Quake-affected ASID61 (Revision 1)

Appeal Target: US$ 5,325,016

Balance Requested from ACT Alliance: US$ 0

Geneva, 19 November 2007

On 27 May 2006, an earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter Scale struck Java, Indonesia, with its epicentre in the Indian Ocean about 33 kilometres south of Bantul district, Yogyakarta. Major devastation resulted, particularly in the districts of Bantul in Yogyakarta Province and Klaten in Central Java Province. Official figures remain at 5,749 people killed, over 38,000 injured and more than 127,000 houses completely destroyed, with over 450,000 additional houses damaged by the earthquake. It is estimated that 1,173,742 people were made homeless. (IFRC)

ACT members Yayasan Tanggul Bencana Indonesia (YTBI), Yakkum Emergency Unit (YEU) and Church World Service Indonesia (CWSI/ACT) have been assisting the affected population with activities in the areas of water and sanitation, health services, livelihood recovery, shelter, psycho-social support, capacity building and preparedness.

This document is the fully revised appeal, now also including a revised programme for CWS for an extended period to 30 November 2007. Revised proposals for YEU and YTBI were issued on 28 August and 11 September respectively. YEU and YTBI programme implementation came to a close on 30 September 2007.

The CWS revision reflects the original goal and objectives but justifies adjustments that had to be made in the crisis phase as well as scaling-up of activities in the post-crisis rehabilitation phase, specifically in the areas of sanitation and shelter. The scaling up of activities has increased the funding target and absorbs much of the current income pledged and received above the previous target.

An external ACT evaluation of the appeal is currently being planned to take place in December 2007.

The appeal funding target is fully covered, and no further funds are requested.

Project Completion Date:

YTBI/ACT - 30 September 2007

YEU/ACT - 30 September 2007

CWS/ACT - 30 November 2007
