Peru
Assistance to earthquake victims - LAPE71 Revision 1
Appeal Target: US$ 855,602
Total requested: US$ 380,867
Geneva, 23 April 2008
The ACT appeal LAPE71 was issued on 13 November 2007 to respond to the 15 August 2007 earthquake that hit Peru 262 kilometers to the south of Lima with a magnitude of 8.0 on the Richter scale, affecting an area of 13,000 square kilometers, in particular the regions of Ica, Lima and Huancavelica. The earthquake resulted in 540 deaths, 4,200 injuries, 52,000 victims and close to 200,000 persons affected. An estimated 53,000 homes were destroyed and around 22,000 homes were damaged.
This ACT appeal LAPE71, has now been revised to reflect adjustments made by the ACT member Lutheran World Relief (LWR) to its activities.
LWR is assisting families in the districts of Arma, Aurahuá, and Chupamarca in the province of Castrovirreyna. The original proposal included temporary shelters for 200 families to be provided by LWR's partner CEDINCO. Since shelters have been provided by the Government, this component has been removed. Instead, LWR plans to expand the operations on irrigation that will be implemented together with the implementing partners San Javier and EDUCA. Please note that the total amount requested by LWR is not affected by this revision. The other activities include assistance to local promoters (both men and women) in post-trauma treatment and professional accompaniment which will benefit 550 families.
The revision also includes a budget for a coordination visit by the ACT CO. Such visit is recommended for a double purpose: to carry out the monitoring of progress of the activities, given the assessment and coordination difficulties the appeal has experienced at the launch. Equally important is to assess any possibilities of strengthening the future support to ACT members in Peru.
The proposals from ACT members DIACONIA, PREDES and PDA remain unchanged from the 13 November 2007 appeal. The income has been adjusted to reflect the present funding situation.
DIACONÍA is providing assistance in the districts of Huangascar, Viñac and Madeán with shelter, capacity strengthening for the construction of safe housing, restoration of 3,500 meters of irrigation canals and support for post-traumatic stress recovery.
PDA, through its local implementing partner Manos Unidas contra la Pobreza, is assisting 150 families in the community of San Benito, Chincha, with provision and maintenance of a water supply system and the installation of an alternative drainage system.
PREDES, together with its partner KAIROS, is assisting families of the provinces of Chincha and Pisco, with safe houses building and mental health support through trained promoters. PREDES is also providing advocacy training to the local authorities, communities and 30 volunteers.
Project Completion Date:
LWR: 30 November 2008
DIACONIA: 30 November 2008
PDA: 31 May 2008
PREDES: 31 July 2008
