More than 9,000 people have been evacuated from an area surrounding Mount Gamkonora in Halmahera, North Maluku province, eastern Indonesia, during volcanic eruptions this week. Ash and smoke from the volcano have forced the evacuations of 9,328 people, Church World Service Indonesia reports. Those displaced are staying in tents provided by local army and police officials.
RESPONSE: Based on initial assessments and requests by two local CWS partners, the Christian Evangelical Church in Halmahera (Gereja Masehi Injili di Halmahera- GMIH) and Yayasan Tanggul Bencana Indonesia (YTBI), CWS is sending 300 blankets and 300 plastic mats to the affected area to assist those displaced. CWS staff plan to arrive with the materials on Saturday (July 14) and will work with GMIH, YTBI and other local partners for further assessments.
