Indonesia hit by severe flooding: Malteser International starts emergency aid

Cologne/Aceh. Due to the heaviest rainfalls since more than 25 years, huge parts of North, East and Central Aceh were flooded over Christmas. More than 100 people died in the water and by landslides, hundreds are still missed. According to official numbers, up to 170,000 people had to leave their homes.

The Coordinator in charge of Malteser International, Wil Andrea, together with her colleague Sandra Fröbe, manages the distribution of relief goods. In co-operation with Cordaid and after clearance with the UN-organisations, 1,500 so called family kits will be supplied. The kits include articles of daily use as well as sanitary products and food stuff.

The packages will be given out with the help of honorary workers from the affected villages. Chosen were around 20 villages in the regions of Aceh, Utara and Lhokseumawe, which are difficult to access and, therefore, are in danger to be neglected by other relief activities.
