Cologne/Islamabad. Malteser International - with financial support of the German Federal Foreign Office - distributes survival kits to 1000 families affected by the flood disaster in the south of Pakistan. The victims of the devastating cyclone Yemyin and the following torrential rains received material to build provisional shelters, drinking water tanks, water purification tablets, hygiene articles and metal boxes to safely store their personal stuff. Additionally, Malteser International provides a Pakistani doctor who will organize the distribution and implement trainings on hygiene together with local partner organizations in order to prevent the outbreak of infectious diseases such as Cholera.

The cyclone Yemyin left huge damages in South Asia. The south of Pakistan is particularly affected by the consequences of the storm and the following rainfalls. About 500 people died in the floods, 150,000 became homeless. Altogether more than 1.5 million people are affected.

Malteser International has been working in the north of Pakistan since the earthquake of 2005. Having provided emergency aid, the organisation now ensures free treatment for vulnerable people in a mountain valley by the help of mobile medical teams and rebuilds the water supply in the region of Kohistan.

People look at a broken road destroyed by flood waters in Jasaldia, 40km (25 miles) from the capital Dhaka, August 8, 2007. 20 million people in neighbouring Bangladesh are coping with flood waters that have swamped more than half of the low-lying, riverine nation.
