Cologne. With financial support from the Federal Foreign Office of Germany, Malteser International is handing out food items and blankets to the population of the provinces Quang-Nam and Danang in Central Vietnam most hit by the floods. Malteser International is also providing iron sheets for the construction of temporary shelters to 1,250 families. To prevent the outbreak of malaria, the organisation is distributing mosquito nets. The families also get additional washing agents and hygiene articles to ameliorate the hygiene situation and to prevent the outbreak of infectious diseases.

During the past days and weeks, heavy rainfalls have caused severe floods in Central Vietnam. Numerous rivers have burst their banks and have destroyed entire zones. According to the Vietnamese authorities, more than 100 people have lost their lives in the floods and more than 90,000 are directly affected. Furthermore, the water has destroyed about 21,000 tons of foodstuff and 30,000 tons of seeds.

Malteser International has been working in Vietnam since 1966. With health care and income generating projects, the organisation is fighting poverty in Vietnam.
