Four out of our six Plan Programme Units on the border with Eritrea (Kassala, Edweim/Alaga, Guli and North Kordofan) have been flooded due to heavy rains and the River Gash bursting its banks over the last few days.
Several Plan communities are currently inaccessible, due to waterlogged roads, which are not only hampering relief efforts but also affecting communications and our normal programme work.
Plan staff are currently on the ground assessing the situation with affected community members. Initial reports suggest several houses and food storage areas have been washed away.
Plan and other NGOs have begun arranging emergency relief efforts to help the affected communities. The immediate needs have been identified as shelter, drinking water, and food. However, there is also a high risk of outbreaks of water-borne disease.
As soon as we receive updated information regarding sponsored children affected, we will endeavour to share it with our sponsors and publish it online.
