Families are wading through waist-high waters to find dry ground.
Children International - Santiago
Tropical Storm Olga has flooded low-lying areas of the Dominican Republic causing residents of at least 22 communities to evacuate their homes.
El Caribe CDN online newspaper reports that seven people have died and several more are missing in the floodwaters.
Children International staff in Santiago reports that the Yaque Del Norte river overflowed its banks due to heavy rains. The communities of Rafey, La Otra Banda and Yaguita De Pastor have been affected.
Santiago agency director Amparo Guerrero tells us that in Rafey, "The entire community has been evacuated. All the families and their houses are full of water, including about 200 sponsored families."
Our agency in Santo Domingo reports heavy rains and strong winds associated with Olga, but no major damages have been reported.
Over 28,600 children are sponsored through Children International in the Dominican Republic.
