Heavy rains and flooding in Honduras have affected more than 200,000 people and claimed 22 lives. The continuous rains, which fell earlier in the week, left many homes in the communities near San Pedro Sula under water triggering mudslides in some instances.
Officials with Children International, a U.S.-based humanitarian organization serving poor children and their families in the city, report that 22,000 people have been evacuated from their homes including 39 sponsored families and 85 children. High waters in the villages of Brisas del Lago, El Valle and Monte Carmel washed out the meager belongings of many of those poor families.
The families are being housed in nearby schools and temporary shelters. Local officials hope to allow people to return to their homes by Sunday.
