Welthungerhilfe is supporting flood victims in South Asia

Bonn, 03.08.2007. Deutsche Welthungerhilfe (German Agro Action) is going to support the victims of the devastating floods in South Asia with an extensive relief programme. Food, plastic sheets and drinking water will be distributed throughout Nepal, India and Bangladesh in the course of the coming week.

Unusually heavy rainfall during the monsoon season in South Asia has caused a number of large rivers to swamp their embankments. According to information provided by the UN, almost 20 million people in Nepal, India and Bangladesh have been made homeless. Entire districts now lie under water. Thousands of homes and huge tracts of agricultural land have been destroyed. Furthermore, landslides have buried many villages.

Welthungerhilfe is working together with its long-term partner organisation in the region to carry out emergency aid in the places people have fled to in escaping the floods. In addition, Welthungerhilfe will be coordinating its relief programme with its European partners within the Alliance 2015 in order to maximise efficiency.
