The Irish Red Cross welcomes the
circulation of the first draft of an international treaty to ban cluster munitions today, Wednesday, 28th May 2008.Mr John Roycroft, Secretary General of the Irish Red Cross said that while
he commended all those involved in getting to this stage of the negotiations, he strongly urged the delegates to work hard on reaching agreement by the end of the week in the interest of those killed
and injured by these munitions every day."We are so close to ridding the world of these weapons. But there is still a lot of work to be done and it is vital that everybody around the
negotiation table maintains the momentum so that thousands of lives can be saved in the future," he said.The Irish Red Cross Secretary General said that, while there may be some
refinements to the draft before it would be agreed, it does allow for the elimination of dangerous cluster munitions. If achieved this treaty will be a historic achievement that will do so much for so
many throughout the world.The negotiations are taking place at Croke Park and are due to continue until the end of the week.
