In a personal letter to more than 60,000 individuals around the country, David Andrews, Chairman of the Irish Red Cross said that children in many parts of the world faced a sad and terrifying Christmas this year

\x93Just like the children we know, they were born to loving parents, but as victims of war they\x92ve been orphaned, separated from their families or abducted and then terrorised into becoming soldiers," said David Andrews.

Mr Andrews noted that last year the Red Cross helped rescue 1,000 children from servitude in armies. But, he stressed, the task remains immense with more than half a million children still serving in armies around the world today.

The Irish Red Cross Chairman also thanked the thousands of Irish people who supported our recent appeal for victims of the Bangladesh Cyclone, which to date has raised over \x8060,000.

About half this amount came from the business sector and David Andrews said it was good to see companies in Ireland promoting corporate responsibility on the world stage.
