China

At present, official government estimates suggest that more than 16,000 people were killed, though many more remain trapped or missing. With access to some of the worst affected areas still difficult, the full picture might take days to become clear.As the scale of devastation in Sichuan becomes clearer, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has today launched an emergency appeal for \x8012.4 million to support 100,000 survivors over the next 12 months.The focus of the International Federations\x92 appeal is to support the efforts of the Chinese Red Cross in the region and the \x8025,000 provided by the Irish Red Cross will go directly to helping these Red Cross aid workers to provide emergency shelter materials.Any donations given to the Irish Red Cross earmarked for the China Disaster will be sent to Red Cross relief workers in China who are already amongst communities helping those most affected.The Irish Red Cross launched an official appeal on Tuesday 6th May for those affected by the Myanmar cyclone and continues to focus a huge effort on this worsening humanitarian disaster. With the unofficial death toll now at 128,000 and over 1.5 million Burmese people desperately in need of aid the Irish Red Cross is urgently calling for donations.
