Muslim Aid has launched a £3 million appeal for orphans and widows in Iraq, in the wake of the continuing violence and the circle of killing that has enveloped the country.

It has been calculated that the violence in Baghdad claims 120 lives a day in the Iraqi capital. It has also been estimated by US scientists that over half a million civilians have been killed since the US invasion in 2003, and last month has seen some of the bloodiest sectarian violence since then.

"The orphans and the widows are the people who feel the brunt of this violence," said Saif Ahmad, CEO of Muslim Aid. "They are the ones who have to pick up the pieces, and move on with their lives. That is one of the reasons why we are launching this appeal."

Muslim Aid has operated a field office in Iraq since 2003, and has put a lot of resources into orphan care in the war-torn country. With Iraq verging on the brink of civil war, Muslim Aid has stepped up its drive to provide assistance to the country.

A U.S. Army officer picks up a piece of evidence gathered by the U.S. Military which is claimed to show Iran's support to militant Iraqis fighting U.S. forces at a news conference in Baghdad February 14, 2007. The U.S. military in Iraq on Wednesday seemed to distance itself from comments made by a U.S. defence official at the weekend that implicated the "highest levels" of Tehran's government in arming Iraqi militants.
