Even today in Pisco, the city most affected by last Wednesday´s earthquake, the scenes are those of devastation.
"The city smells of blood and death. We can still see bodies under the large piles of rubble. Survivors are wandering around in the rubble. Children follow their parents or family. They look dehydrated, angry and tired ", said Ester Luis, communications officer.
The fire-fighters continue the removal of bodies from the rubble. Efforts to rescue have ended for the day. And the number of casualties increased to 500deaths and 1,600 wounded, while 16, 669 houses have been destroyed. However these figures grow every hour.
Victims are trying to hold up aid shipments in the roads and in some places are causing chaos during the distributions due to their desperation.
Most of the aid sent by the government started to arrive this morning, however it is still insufficient. Water supply has not been restored yet, but electricity and phone lines are slowly being restored.
World Vision arrived in Pisco early this morning and delivered antibiotics, pain killers, and medical supplies for minor operations to the Hospital San Juan de Dios.
At the same time, shoes for children and adults, blankets and clothing are being distributed to 500 families in Ica and Pisco.
A shipment of Cisterns with 5,500 gallons of purified water, two water purifiers, 100 water filters, ten thousand food packages (milk, juice, tuna fish, cookies), 70 family tents and around 2,000 blankets, amongst other things are expected to arrive tomorrow afternoon.
In the disaster area in Lima, distresst people are trying to communicate with their families through the television or radio.
