World Vision's support of farmers and agricultural cooperatives in Bosnia and Herzegovina reaped rewards as several beneficiaries won medals at agricultural fairs
across the country. World Vision had organized participation in these important autumn events through its Market Linkages project.
Beneficiary Vojin Ðurić won a gold medal for a heifer, a gold medal for a ram, and a silver medal for a group of sheep at InterAgro, the International Agricultural Fair in Bijeljina. Mr. Ðurić's awards were a major achievement since the fair had over 100 exhibitors, of which around 40 exhibited cattle.
Zahrudin Hadiabdić, a beekeeper from Olovo, won a bronze medal in the category of forest honey at the Bee Festival in Sarajevo. The festival is the biggest bee fair in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with more than 70 beekeepers exhibiting their wares.
Loan recipient Drago Purković won five medals at an agricultural fair in Rogatica with two cows and two heifers in first place, as well as a prize for sheep breeding.
In addition, the Cooperative Union of Republic of Serbska, the Serbian region of Bosnia, won a silver medal for their stand arrangement at Agros, the International Agricultural and Food Industry Fair in Banja Luka, among a field of over 140 other exhibitors.
'These awards are a huge boost for the farmers and an inspiration to the all of our beneficiaries because it is extremely difficult for both individual farmers and cooperatives in Bosnia to succeed in the demanding market,' said Aida Selimić, project coordinator and economic advisor for World Vision Bosnia and Herzegovina.
'Helping farmers to attend and participate in the exhibits of agricultural fairs has been a significant advance for many of them,' she added.
Market Linkages supports farmers' associations, cooperatives, food-processing companies and agricultural producers in applying new marketing principles and encourages them to cooperate with other stakeholders in the country and wider region.
Market Linkages offers training on promotional activities and branding, building of networks, communication and public relations. Training participants have the opportunity to create their own marketing plan with a budget and submit it to World Vision for potential funding. These marketing activities included participation at fairs and the valuable opportunity to prove the quality of their animals and products.
