Uhana Central Dispensara, Ampara.

The Uhana Central Dispensary located 15
kilometres north west of Ampara, was one
of the few medical facilities to remain
functioning in the area after the
tsunami struck. As well as
rehabilitating the original dispensary
the German Red Cross constructed an
additional building which will now be
able to provide emergency care and
specialized medical assistance which
means that local people will no longer
need to travel to the main hospital in
Ampara for outpatient care.

Balapitiya Base Hospital, Galle.

The expansion and refurbishment of
Balapitiya Base Hospital in western
Galle has been carried out with funding
from the Cyprus Red Cross Society. With
inadequate ward space, no intensive care
unit and only one operating theatre, the
hospital was badly in need of
improvement. The IFRC designed and
constructed a new three-storey building
to accommodate an operating theatre, an
intensive care unit with six beds and a
male and female surgical ward with 40
beds each. A new outpatients department
has also been built.
