Jan 28 - Fears are rising for the safety of hundreds of thousands of people trapped in Sri Lanka's war zone.

Sri Lankan forces are closing in on the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, leading many to believe that the 25-year conflict is coming to and end.

Nonetheless, the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross say around 250,000 civilians are trapped in the conflict zone. India, which is home to around 60 million Tamils, has offered aid to Sri Lanka to assist the country with the rebuilding of its infrastructure, but it has made no mention of a truce.
