July 9 - Protesters have occupied new houses in L'Aquila, Italy on demand that they are given to earthquake survivors.

Playing on the "Yes we can" election campaign slogan of U.S. President Barack Obama, protesters erected a huge "Yes We Camp" banner on a hill overlooking the G8 venue site. The banner, clearly visible for the thousands of journalists attending the G8 summit, aims to draw attention to the some 60,000 people made homeless after April's earthquake.

Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi made the decision to change the G8 venue location from a Mediterranean island near Sardinia to L'Aquila following the earthquake in order to plough finance into the area. But many inhabitants are angered by the event being held in their town.
