TRIPOLI, Jan 25 (Reuters) - Libyan coastguards saved 111 illegal migrants from perishing in Mediterranean waters on Thursday after they tried to reach Europe from the North African country, Libya's official news agency Jana said.

It gave no details of the circumstances but said the migrants of various nationalities received the necessary humanitarian aid after being rescued.

Under pressure from European governments, Libya has stepped up efforts to stop growing numbers of Africans trying desperately to reach Europe in search for a better life.

It has deported around 8,500 illegal immigrants since mid-September, according to official announcements.

Some rights groups have accused Libya of jailing migrants arbitrarily, submitting them to torture and forced labour and stripping them of their belongings.

Libyan officials have dismissed such criticism, saying the authorities treat arrested migrants fairly.
