Tunisia court delays synagogue bomb appeal hearing

TUNIS, Dec 7 (Reuters) - Tunisia's appeal court on Thursday delayed the hearing of a man convicted of preparing a suicide bombing at a synagogue that killed 21 people, including French and German tourists. The hearing has been put off six times for Belgacem Nawar, sentenced in June to 20 years in prison on charges of preparing the 2002 bombing in Djerba. The attack was claimed by al Qaeda. The delay this time was caused by the absence of defence lawyer Samir Ben Amor. The court named Ahlem Jenzi to replace Amor at a hearing on Dec. 18 if he fails to show up again. The bomber, Nawar's nephew, drove a tanker filled with cooking gas to the synagogue and blew it up as tourists were entering the building, which was virtually destroyed. The blast killed 14 Germans, five Tunisians and two French nationals. Another 30 people were wounded.
